Egungun



Masquerade it is also known as heavenly man. We use masquerade to celebrate the remembrance of our forefathers in every year in a traditional society.
Masquerade is a good Orisa that gives blessing, merriment, aggrandizement and way forward.
During the masquerade festival people will accompanied him by playing drums and other various instruments. Different cloth could be seen at masquerade body like; Aso Aran, Aso Alagba, Aso Afi Alaro, Aso Pupa and so on.

Masquerade is a good Orisa that sent go the planet Earth by Olodumare (The Creator). Particularly in Yoruba traditional societies to make people happy and laugh and also go wish blessing from the gods for the town or each. Also is a kind of Orisa that gives rich, children, goodness and so on.

We also use masquerade when evil thing has been operate in one family or generation,  Masquerade will sent out to lodge his "Ago" or cloth on the ground go restore peace and joy yo their family.

We have different kind of masquerade like:
Baba Lago, Egungun Eleru, Egungun Ode, Egungun Paaka, Egungun Awuleku tabi Alagbo; this Egungun Alagbo belong to herbalist man because is a warrior masquerade. Also we have Egungun Apidan, thus can be used in funeral ceremony or Orisa ceremony etc.

Basically Egungun and Oro they are like brother and sister as it stipulated in Owonrin Ofun, which say: Owonrin Ofun we do, Babalamo Egungun  lodifafun Egungun abufun Oro, Nijo ti won johun tode orun bowa saye, ebo ni won ni won ose, Egungun tode orun bows saye, ebo ni won ni won ose, Egungun nikan logbebo nbe Yoruba.

Thus our attempt to this discuss is more of investigation but, just to elucidated further that, among the Egungun favourites food are moimoin, corn, cock, pounded yam, amala, plenty of wine, alligator pepper and kolanut are used to sacrifices for masquerade.

Different names given to masquerade, such as: Obadimeji, Obadunja, those two names related to king or prince. Theg aldo bear name like Owolaake, Omolaake, Owolewa and so on.

About Ifabukola Obidiran Obaluaye

High priest Ifabukola Obidiran Obaluaye is an exponent of African traditional religion. He was born in Oyó state, Nigeria in 1969 at Ile Arole Iya Oba Agure street, Apinnin Oyo. He commenced his formal education at Baptist primary school 1, Ogese in Oyo East local government are a, Oyo state I  1977 to 1983.
